The friendly face of Robert Louis Stevenson accompanies Norman Malvenan on this
journey, told in the Scots of his Fife childhood, to visit relatives and
friends in Canada, Hawai‘I, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and Samoa. It’s a
journey, like Stevenson’s, which starts with childhood imagination but takes
the poet “on the back of the ocean / tae wilder shores.” A journey of
self-discovery, “muivin closer . . . tae wha A am / take wha A’ve / iver been.”
Norman Malvenan is a poet who is increasingly writing in Scots. The poems in Wilder
Shores, his first published collection, are inspired by the round-the-world
trip he took with his wife in early 2025. There were many highlights on this
journey, not least of which was their visit to the home and final resting place
of one of Norman’s literary heroes.
